What does the Word Counter do?

It counts all characters, non-whitespace characters, words, and lines as you type. Use it for post limits, manuscript length, application forms, and translation work.

Counting rules

  • All characters

    A user-perceived character counts as one. Spaces, tabs, and line breaks are included.

  • Without whitespace

    Spaces, tabs, and line breaks are excluded. Punctuation and numbers remain included.

  • Words

    Supported browsers use language-aware word boundaries. Other browsers fall back to splitting on whitespace.

  • Lines

    Lines are separated by line breaks. Empty input has zero lines, and a final line break affects the count.

When available, the browser's language-aware word segmentation is used. Otherwise, words are separated by whitespace.

Is the estimated reading time exact?

No. It is a reference based on a typical reading speed; actual time varies by reader and text difficulty.
